Cersei Lannister “You’re a Hateful Woman…”

Every time making the choice for revenge, Cersei Lannister by small unevident acts is ruining her children

What Cersei rejects the conventional and family values — is bad, but what she betrays even her own — it is hateful.

The satisfaction and pleasure of taking revenge on her enemies is stronger for Cersei than the love for children. Cersei is filled with hatred so much that the love for children does not fit in her.

Qyburn and the Mountain are symbols of Cersei Lannister.

Margaery Tyrell’s words to lady Olenna about the “string of dead sparrow heads” around Margaery’s neck, come true at the end of the sixth season, when Cersei arranges an explosion in the Sept of Baelor.

The text of the video about Cersei Lannister

Cersei has own values which she is ready to defend. That is the only positive trait in Cersei. Tyrion: «You love your children. It’s your one redeeming quality». Cersei recalls her first child with tenderness: «Such a little thing. A bird without feathers». Cersei: «Love no one but your children. On that front, a mother has no choice». The love to the children, respect for mother’s feelings is a value for Cersei.

And the second: Cersei does not like it, when they hurt little girls. Maester Pycelle: «No, come to my chambers and I will examine you personally» — Cersei: «She’ll do no such thing» — «Oh, Your Grace. This young lady sought my advice» — «You should see Qyburn. He’s quite good.» — «Qyburn? Deplorable man. Brought shame on the Citadel with his repugnant experiment» — Cersei: «More repugnant than your gnarled fingers on that girl’s things?» Cersei: «Everywhere in the world they hurt little girls».

Prince Oberyn protects girls, including Cersei’s daughter Myrcella. Cersei: «I want to believe she’s happy» — Oberyn: «You have my word».

Oberyn fights the Mountain, for the sake of fairness to a woman and her children. Oberyn: «What about what I want? Justice for my sister and her children». Oberyn: «You raped my sister. You murdered her. You killed her children». The Mountain is guilty of a crime: in this duel he is an injustice symbol. The Mountain is a symbol of injustice. Cersei is on the side of injustice. Wishing to revenge Tyrion, she has employed the Mountain, without thinking of his crime. However in the final of the duel Gregory Clegane publicly confesses the crime: Gregor: «I killed her children, then I raped her. Then I smashed her head in like this!» The Mountain is a symbol of violence.

But despite the fact that she has learned, Cersei does everything to save life of Gregor who rapes women and kills their children. Cersei: «You can save him?» — Qyburn: «Difficult to say, Your Grace. But if my past work is any guide… We stand a chance» — Cersei: «Do everything you can. Come to me for anything you need». The fact that Gregor Clegane has died in the duel, it is fair. Saving the Mountain, Cersei consciously supports injustice and violence. Cersei: «I choose violence». And betrays even that little she values women and their children. That’s why Cersei is hateful. Jaime: «You’re a hateful woman».

Cersei doesn’t even notice that uses her own children to cover up her revenge. Oberyn: «Cersei approached me. We spoke a great deal about her daughter. How worried your sister is about her. She was trying very hard to pretend she had not come to sway me against you. I think she may have even believed it herself» — Tyrion: «Making honest feelings do dishonest work is one of her many gifts».

Although with Oberyn’s death, she loses the defender of the beloved daughter, Cersei rejoices in his death because it’s an opportunity to take revenge on Tyrion. Cersei puts the revenge on the first place. She is able to take revenge in advance to those who didn’t do anything to her yet, such as Margaery Tyrell. Cersei: «If you ever call me “sister” again, I’ll have you strangled in your sleep». Cersei: «Margaery Tyrell dotes on filthy urchins for a reason. She dresses like a harlot for a reason». Cersei incites Joffrey against Margaery, contributing to the fact that lady Olenna seriously begins to be afraid of him and decides on a murder.

Cersei takes revenge on Margaery out of fear which pursues her all her life because of a prediction received in the childhood. Cersei receives numerous warnings that she should not go to the fortuneteller. The first: Melara: «We shouldn’t go in» — Cersei: «Of course we should». The second: Maggy the Frog: «Get out! Get out!» — Melara: «Let’s go!» — Cersei: «No» — Maggy the Frog: «Listen to your friend». The third: Maggy the Frog: «Everyone wants to know their future until they know their future». But Cersei doesn’t learn the lesson and demands a prediction. The creators of the serial show that person himself determines his future. The fourth: Maggy the Frog: «Three questions you get. You won’t like the answers». Only Cersei at the moment decides: the prophecy will come true or won’t come true. It is necessary just to go away and not to ask questions. But despite the fact that the prophecy The fifth: frightens, The sixth: brings pain, The seventh: and subordinates to itself, Cersei nevertheless listens to it. Maggy the Frog: «You’ll be queen. For a time. Then comes another, younger, more beautiful, to cast you down and take all you hold dear». Cersei: «It’s prophecy. It’s fate» — Jaime: «You don’t believe that» — Cersei: «Of course I do».

The prophecy is an ordeal that is given to Cersei. The prophecy blinds, begets vindictiveness and directs her actions. Because of it Cersei sees in Margaery only a rival of whom gets rid.

We see as come true words of Margaery Tyrell: «End up with a string of dead sparrow heads around my neck».

Initially, the Sparrows stand, forming a circle. The long shot of the Sept is shown often and long, to focus on the Sparrows who are building up a symbolical necklace.

Look, this is the string of sparrow heads around Margaery’s neck:

The Sparrows perish because don’t let Margaery get out. Margaery in the circle of Sparrows: «Let me through! Let me through!» It turns out, she unwittingly copes with them at the cost of her life. And all ends up for Margaery with a string around her neck of the heads of the Sparrows. Dead Sparrows. Explosion inside the Sept.

Cersei watches the explosion. Along with Margaery, Cersei destroys the entire House Tyrell, which remains without heirs. Lady Olenna: «Cersei stole the future from me. She killed my son. She killed my grandson. She killed my granddaughter». Cersei repeats the gloomy feat of her father Tywin Lannister, who once destroyed House Reyne of Castamere, about which is composed the best-known song of Westeros. Cersei: «You know the song The Rains of Castamere?» — Margaery: «Of course. They play it so often here at court» — Cersei: «So you know the story of House Reyne of Castamere?» — Margaery: «Not as well as you, I’m sure» — Cersei: «House Reyne was a powerful family. Very wealthy.  The second wealthiest in Westeros. Aren’t the Tyrells the second wealthiest family in Westeros now?» Cersei: «Do you know where House Reyne is now?» — Margaery: «Gone» — Cersei: «Gone. A gentle word. Why not say “slaughtered”? Every man, woman and child put to the sword». And at the coronation of Cersei sounds a variation of the melody The Rains of Castamere.

The murder of Margaery is a blow to the Tommen’s feelings, which Cersei has ignored. She’s not with him. While Cersei is busy with a revenge to a Septa Onella, Tommen is perishing. These episodes are put nearby specially to show that Cersei puts revenge above the main value — her children. She loses them, herself helping the prophecy to come true.

The prediction Cersei uses as an excuse. Cersei: «No, I knew this would happen. The witch told me years ago. She promised me three children and she promised me they’d die. And gold their shroud. Everything she said came true. You couldn’t have stopped it».

Once Cersei considered that she lives only for the sake of children. Cersei: «But if it weren’t for my children, I’d have thrown myself from the highest window in the Red Keep. They’re the reason I’m alive». Children die. For the sake of what Cersei continues to live? Lady Olenna: «We mothers do what we can to keep our sons from the grave. But they do seem to yearn for it» — Cersei: «And yet the world belongs to them» — Lady Olenna: «A ridiculous arrangement, to my mind». The words of lady Olenna aroused a thought in Cersei’s head to reign herself, though it is against the custom. She is crowned by Qyburn who became the High Septon, the Maester and the Hand of the Queen before Cersei has officially become the Queen. This is violation of the rules. But orders, rules and traditions are not important to Cersei. As well as to Qyburn.

Qyburn and the Mountain are symbols of Cersei Lannister

Maester Pycelle: «That is exactly the sort of arrogance that had him expelled from the Citadel, Your Grace. His curiosity was deemed dangerous and unnatural». Qyburn is known for his penchant to the unnatural. To comprehend death essence he opens living bodies. Jaime: «You performed experiments on living men». Qyburn puts death above life. And Cersei appreciates death of enemies more than the lives of children.

Vengeance — that is what Cersei chooses. Cersei: «I want to know who they are. I want to know where they are». And she wins using cruel assistants Qyburn and the Mountain — guns of her revenge. Qyburn: «If it please Your Grace, he has taken a holy vow of silence. He has sworn that he will not speak until all His Grace’s enemies are dead». The Mountain is a symbol of revenge.

Cersei chooses strength, even if it is the force of evil. Cersei: «Will it weaken him?» — Qyburn: «Oh, no» — Cersei: «Very well, then». Cersei gets force and power, showing the worst qualities. Cersei: «I drink because it feels good. I killed my husband because it felt good to get rid of him», Cersei: «I f*ck my brother because it feels good…» Cersei: «I lie about f*cking my brother…» Cersei: «I killed your High Sparrow…  and all his little sparrows… because it felt good to watch them burn. It felt good to imagine their shock and their pain. No thought has ever given me greater joy». As the Mad King she burns people alive and becomes the Black Queen. And the Mountain is a symbol, an embodiment of the worst aspect of Cersei: blind thirst for revenge, injustice and violence. That’s why the Mountain’s face is black. This is the new face of Cersei. The Mountain replaces her in communication with people, even with her son. Symbolically this is shown by the fact that the lion… is covering by the Mountain.

In the new recovered Mountain almost there is nothing left human, just like in Cersei. She not only betrays the family and traditions, but doesn’t even see how for the sake of revenge betrays her own values and her children. Oberyn: «We can avenge them» — Cersei: «Yes, we can avenge them». With the movement down the creators of the serial show that revenge is a wrong path. Cersei knows that for Oberyn it has ended with death. But she doesn’t learn the lesson. She doesn’t pass the test and continues to go the way of revenge.

Cersei destroys established order. Cersei: «The faith and the crown are the two pillars that hold up this world. One collapses, so does the other». Cersei undermines the Faith. Explosion of the Sept with star. And the Crown: at first producing illegitimate heirs, and then herself having usurped the power.

While Cersei reigns, whether she will want to remain alone? To strengthen her position she needs an heir, and for this purpose — a king. Who will support the Queen? May be Lord Baelish? They are two of a kind. Baelish: «A picture of me on the Iron Throne…» Because Jaime has already begun to understand what is Cersei. Jaime: «You’re a hateful woman. Why have the gods made me love a hateful woman?»
