A beetle in “Game of Thrones” is a symbol of a pathetic, flawed person, a cripple, who becomes a scoundrel. In “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon” two characters have the beetle symbol – Tyrion and Larys.
Both are flawed and pathetic from birth, with an oppressive need to dominate in order to assert themselves.
Born a dwarf, Tyrion is focused on self–pity, like a pathetic bug that anyone can crush, which is why the authors give Tyrion a beetle symbol.
Tyrion: “Do you remember Cousin Orson, Orson Lannister?” – Jaime: “Of course. Wet-nurse dropped him on his head and left him simple.” – Tyrion: “Simple? Used to sit all day in the garden crushing beetles with a rock… Nothing made him happier”
Tyrion: “So what do you think? Why did he do it? What’s it all about?”
Orson crushed the beetles because he was even more pathetic to everyone than Tyrion, but compared to the bugs, Orson felt like everyone else.
Jaime: “Nothing made you happier. You’d think being tormented from birth would have given you some affinity for the afflicted.” – Tyrion: “On the contrary. Laughing at another person’s misery was the only thing that made me feel like everyone else.”
Self-pity encourages Tyrion to experience happiness at the expense of the misfortunes and humiliation of others.
Varys: “You have many admirable qualities, self-pity is not one of them.”
Tyrion likes power, likes to lead, at least as the Hand.
Tyrion: “’Cause I liked it. Power. Even as a servant.”
Tyrion: “I happen to be an accomplished diplomat” - Bronn: “Oh.”
Tyrion is overly talkative, believing that this is diplomacy, but it only works with Mord or mountain tribes, and even then – with the help of Lannister gold. In the episode of Oberyn meeting, diplomacy failed.
Bronn: “Some accomplished diplomacy that was.”
At the same time, by the end of the series, with the help of meanness, betrayal and murder, Tyrion the beetle achieved the post of the Hand, eliminated the Targaryen competitors Daenerys and Jon Snow, and reigns instead of King Bran.
Larys, like Tyrion, is the youngest son, a lame cripple, flawed from birth. And the authors give him a beetle symbol. But unlike Tyrion, Larys is silent and has no self-pity.
Larys: “When one is never invited to speak, one learns instead to observe”.
And to think. Thanks to his taciturnity and observation, he develops strategic thinking and a sophisticated mind – something that is necessary in diplomacy. Unlike Tyrion, Larys does not waste energy on conversations, says little, but with every word motivates the queen to do the things that he needs.
But just like Tyrion, with the help of meanness, betrayal and the murder of his father and brother, he achieves the title of lord. Like Tyrion, he wants power. And it is through diplomacy that he achieves this power.
Power over the queen.
